At Kehoe-France Southshore, Middle School students experience a clear, balanced approach to academic achievement. They take NWEA MAP Growth assessments three times a year - in reading, language, mathematics, and science - so teachers can track growth, personalize instruction, and set meaningful individual goals. Students consistently show strong progress on these tests, often performing above national averages.
Day to day, teachers use projects, presentations, lab work, and reflective writing alongside traditional tests to see how students apply their learning. Quarterly report cards on a 10-point grading scale give families a straightforward view of achievement across core subjects.
Throughout the year, students celebrate success through Honor Roll recognitions, academic awards, Celebrations of Learning, and advisory moments that spotlight effort, leadership, and character as well as top grades.
The Middle School years at Kehoe-France Southshore are a time of remarkable growth - academically, socially, and personally. As students move toward greater independence, they develop the skills, confidence, and mindset needed to thrive in high school and beyond.
Through intentional focus on Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, they strengthen their ability to think critically and creatively, communicate clearly and respectfully, collaborate effectively, manage their time and responsibilities, and conduct ethical, digitally savvy research across subjects.
At the same time, they build life and leadership skills that prepare them to make a positive impact: learning to speak up for themselves and take ownership of their learning; working productively with peers in class, advisory, and enrichment; showing empathy and global awareness as they consider diverse perspectives; developing adaptability and resilience when faced with change or challenge; and acting with integrity and responsibility in line with the IB Learner Profile traits - principled, caring, reflective, and balanced.
In Middle School, students continue their language journey with Spanish as a standard subject, taught three times per week. Lessons focus on real-life communication, building vocabulary, and exploring Spanish-speaking cultures.
Spanish is integrated into the wider learning experience alongside Language & Literature, Mathematics, Science, and Individuals & Societies. Through conversations, projects, and cultural activities, students grow in confidence as communicators and develop a broader global perspective.
At Kehoe-France Southshore, learning extends far beyond the classroom. Middle School students access a rich range of International Learning Opportunities for Students (ILOS) that connect them with peers worldwide and bring global learning to life, including ISP Artists, ISP Chess Masters, ISP Filmmakers, ISP Changemakers, ISP Scientists, the ISP Virtual Exchange Programme, and the ISP Cultural Exchange Programme - a capstone experience in which Grade 7 students travel internationally to ISP partner schools in Spain, Costa Rica, or Canada, immersing themselves in the language, culture, and traditions of another community.
These global opportunities are complemented by meaningful local and regional experiences such as curriculum-based field trips to the Whitney Plantation, the State Capitol, and local science museums; outdoor education camping trips in Grades 5 – 7; and service initiatives including SPCA partnerships, Coats for Kids drives, and hosting a holiday celebration for Magnolia School residents, helping students put empathy into action and make a difference - locally and globally.
The Middle School experience at Kehoe-France Southshore is designed so every student is academically ready, socially confident, and personally prepared for high school and beyond. A strong curriculum builds critical thinking, time management, and core skills in reading, writing, math, science, and research, supported by NWEA MAP assessments three times a year to track growth and personalize instruction.
From Grade 7, students and families join high school information sessions, parent workshops, and mock interviews that clarify options, guide applications, and build confidence for admissions. Through Advisory, service learning, and leadership roles, students also develop self-awareness, empathy, and responsibility, graduating as independent thinkers and confident communicators ready to thrive in their next school community.
Preparation for High School Entrance Exams
In addition to NWEA MAP assessments, Upper Middle School students receive targeted preparation for High School entrance exams, building strong study habits, effective test-taking strategies, and familiarity with the content and skills expected by local High Schools. They also participate in mock High School interviews to practice presenting themselves professionally, articulating their strengths, and speaking confidently about their interests and goals.
Personalized digital learning
At our middle school in Metairie, students in Grades 5 – 7 use 1:1 Chromebooks that they carry with them throughout the day and take home each afternoon, so technology flows seamlessly through every subject. Along the way, they practise responsible digital citizenship and balance, learning to use technology safely, thoughtfully and with purpose.
